The International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) was established in 2014 to address the recommendations for an international response to the near-Earth Object impact threat, and endorsed by the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and the General Assembly resolution 68/75. It forms an international association of institutions involved in detecting, tracking, and characterizing NEOs (Near Earth Objects) to provide the best information available on the NEO hazard and any impact threat. The IAWN is also tasked to use well-defined communication plans and protocols to assist Governments in the analysis of asteroid impact consequences and to support the planning of mitigation responses. The IAWN Steering Committee invites nations, space agencies, institutions, and organizations to lend their respective capabilities (e.g., survey telescope operations; follow-up asteroid observations; orbit computation; hazard analysis; data distribution, processing, and/or archiving, as well as other analyses and ...

Active Project (2015 - 2016) Fabrication of Regolith-Derived Radiation Shield Project Center Independent Research & Developments: KSC IRAD Program | Science Mission Directorate (SMD) ABSTRACT Mars and asteroids have little or no atmosphere, and do not possess a magnetosphere that can protect humans, mechanisms and electronics from damaging Galactic Cosmic Radiation (GCR) and solar particle events (SPE) as does the Earth. These types of space radiation present one of the highest risks to a human crew during interplanetary journeys and to onboard electronics. This project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of carbonaceous asteroid materials as a potential radiation shielding material. ANTICIPATED BENEFITS To NASA funded missions: The logistics required to set up a human outpost on another planetary surface are vast and prohibitively expensive. Space transportation costs are high, so the corresponding value of InSitu Resource Utilization (ISRU) to make structures using local materials is also high. Table of ...

“Best Practices for the Sustainability of Space Operations” Date: 16 September 2019 1 Since the first orbital launch in 1957, the number of artificial objects in Earth orbit has been growing. The corresponding increase in close approaches and collision risk to active space objects from collisions [ 1, 2 ] may lead to interruption of crucial space services [ 3 ]. Orbital debris population modeling indicates the potential for further increases in collision risk [ 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 ]; some of these studies indicate that even in the absence of new space traffic, orbital debris mitigation measures may be insufficient and debris removal remediation may be necessary. Accordingly, mitigation measures are needed to minimize orbital debris and preserve safe access to space in the future. Space industry stakeholders are well aware of these challenges and have achieved key milestones to address them. In 2002, the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC) assembled a set of guidelines for international space ...

Kundu Research (Atmospheres) Summary in orbit now that are used to produce to the earth produce the most accurate global maps of rainfall. estimates of rain amounts, but they generally fly over any given spot on the earth only about once per day. (The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite (TRMM) is one such satellite). The data these "low-flying" satellites provide can therefore only be used to calibrate the estimates provided by the more distant satellites, which are less accurate but view the earth almost continuously; or the satellite data can be averaged over many visits to give some information about the average rainfall in each area. The methods used by the satellites to make their rain estimates are quite indirect. It is important that they be ...

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE UN COPUOS IN THE SPACE DEBRIS MITIGATION: WHAT EVOLUTION FOR THE UN COPUOS? Hugo PETER CDEF, University LYON III, France, Email: hugo.peter1996@gmail.com ABSTRACT knowledge of the space environment, but also to the equipment and devices deployed. As one of the cornerstones of space activities and space law, the UN COPUOS has to evolve in order to keep its central place. This article aims to identify and analyse the various possibilities of this evolution. Accordingly, it addresses the question of the modification of the voting procedure thus arguing in favor of the modification of the consensus and confirming that the ‘one vote per State’ is still necessary for State equality. The two sub-committees allowed the UN COPUOS to be considered as “one of the largest United Nations committees” [3] and also to acquire the status of the main forum for the elaboration of legal principles concerning Outer Space due to the adoption of the five space treaties and to different soft law instruments ...

Preliminary Thermal Analysis of Small Satellites Casper Versteeg∗ and David L. Cotten, PhD† Small Satellite Research Laboratory, The University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, 30602 Small satellites lend themselves well to numerical modeling due to their size. Approximations that would be inappropriate for larger spacecraft can provide valuable insight at this scale, especially for thermally conductive materials. More accurate approximations can be obtained by progressively increasing the level of complexity of these models through the addition of more nodes. More sophisticated models also serve to validate previous numerical models. Inclusion of the beta angle as an independent variable, besides time, gives better insight in the lifetime temperature profile of the satellite, which have all been implemented in MATLAB. Aeroelastic Analysis by Coupled Non-linear Time Domain Simulation Jens Neumann, Jens Nitzsche, Ralph Voss Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. in der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft German Aerospace Center, Member of the Helmholtz Association Institute of Aeroelasticity Bunsenstrasse 10, D-37073 Göttingen jens.neumann@dlr.de; jens.nitzsche@dlr.de; ralph.voss@dlr.de ABSTRACT For an accurate prediction of the steady and unsteady behaviour of an aircraft it is necessary to take into account the deformations of the structure due to the aerodynamic loads and thus the changing of the aerodynamic surface. This is of special importance for transonic and viscous flows, which are very sensitive to small contour changes. The appearance of strong shocks, shock boundary-layer interaction and shock induced flow separation may significantly affect the flutter boundary of an aircraft and cause limit cycle flutter oscillations of the structure. These effects can not be predicted by classical flutter stability computations ...

The German Antarctic Receiving Station O’Higgins and Its VLBI Capabilities Ch. Plötz1 , A. Neidhardt2 , T. Klügel1 , R. Wojdziak3 , J. Serna Puente4 , B. Vaquero Jiménez4 , T. Schüler1 , VLBI Team Wettzell, DFD Team DLR Abstract The German Antarctic Receiving Station (GARS) O’Higgins started in the early 1990s with regular VLBI operations. Because of its remote position on the Antarctic Peninsula, the VLBI observing was mostly restricted to the Antarctic summer months. New equipment, a continuous operation by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and new realizations of observation schedules may open the door for regular observations over the whole year. This paper reports the upgrades carried out in hard- and software and the latest results. Keywords Antarctica VLBI, O’Higgins, GARS 1 Introduction: GARS O’Higgins at a Glance The German Antarctic Receiving Station (GARS) is jointly operated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG, Geodetic Observatory ...

Lares-2 The “Next generation” Lageos By David Arnold Lares-2 is intended to be the first geodetic satellite that can provide one millimeter accuracy. One of the important features is that it eliminates the polarization bias that causes systematic errors in both Lageos and Lares-1. The design is based on a thermal-optical model that I developed 50 years ago. The tool used to design the Lares-2 retroreflector array is program TRANSFR described in SAO Special Report 382. http://davidarnoldresearch.org/1979SAO382.pdf . To the best of my knowledge no one else has ever developed a similar program in the 50 years since I wrote it. The TRANSFR program is unique in that it models diffraction. It computes the far field cross section, centroid, and RMS matrices of the reflection from a retroreflector array. This program was developed to design the first Lageos satellite. The reason is that the diffraction pattern of a retroreflector is not constant over the annulus in the diffraction pattern defined by the velocity ...

CHAPTER 11 Alaska: Glaciers of Kenai Fjords National Park and Katmai National Park and Preserve Bruce A. Giffen, Dorothy K. Hall, and Janet Y.L. Chien ABSTRACT There are hundreds of glaciers in Kenai Fjords National Park (KEFJ) and Katmai National Park and Preserve (KATM) covering over 2,276 km 2 of park land (ca. 2000). There are two primary glacierized areas in KEFJ (the Harding Icefield and the Grewingk-Yalik Glacier Complex) and three primary glacierized areas in KATM (the Mt. Douglas area, the Kukak Volcano to Mt. Katmai area, and the Mt. Martin area). Most glaciers in these parks terminate on land, though a few terminate in lakes. Only KEFJ has tidewater glaciers, which terminate in the ocean. Glacier mapping and analysis of the change in glacier extent has been accomplished on a decadal scale using satellite imagery, primarily Landsat data from the 1970s, 1980s, and from 2000. Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS), Thematic Mapper (TM), and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETMþ) imagery was used to map ...

THE DESIGN AGAINST RADIATION EFFECTS (DARE) LIBRARY S. Redant, R. Marec, L. Baguena, E. Liegeon, J. Soucarre, B. Van Thielen, G. Beeckman, P. Ribeiro, A. Fernandez-Leon, B. Glass. Abstract— This paper describes the first use of a Radiation Hardened by Design (DARE: Design Against Radiation Effects) library for the UMC 180 nm CMOS 6-layer metal technology in a telecom ASIC. An innovative adapted “design for test” approach has been used to allow the evaluation of the behavior of this ASIC under radiation. Radiation tests results and conclusions on future use of this library are also presented. I.INTRODUCTION M any foundries with radiation-hard technologies have left the market due to reduced demand by military and aerospace customers and lack of commercially interesting volumes. The DARE development, performed in the framework of an ESA (European Space Agency) Technology and Research Programme contract [2], is aiming at providing an alternative solution to the one offered by the limited number of foundries that ...

Crawler-Transporters Crawler-Transporter A pair of behemoth machines called crawler-transporters have carried the load of taking rockets and spacecraft to the launch pad for more than 50 years at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Each larger than the size of a baseball infield and powered by locomotive and large electrical power generator engines, the crawler-transporters stand ready to keep up the work for the next generation of launch vehicles that will lift astronauts into space. Able to raise and lower its sides and corners independently, the crawlers are designed to roll underneath a mobile launcher (ML), pick it up and steadily carry it 4.2 miles to Launch Pad 39B. Because each pad is built atop a sloping pyramid, the crawler uses its hydraulic suspension to keep the platform level all the way to the top where it sets the platform in place so the vehicle can lift off safely. Crawler-Transporter 2 The crawlers are unique in the world, having been built in 1965 to move the massive Saturn V rocket ...
